About

Who Wrote These Guides

Lookoutrabexum is a small, independent project by longtime surfers who remember exactly how intimidating the first paddle out felt.

We started this site after years of watching friends quit surfing before they ever stood up. It was rarely a lack of talent. It was fear: of being pulled out, of being in the way, of looking silly. Most beginner content online jumps straight to technique. We think that is backwards. Learn the ocean first, and the technique comes far more easily.

How we write

Every guide is written in plain language, one step at a time, the way a patient coach would explain it on the sand. Safety information follows guidance published by lifesaving organisations including the RNLI, the United States Lifesaving Association, NOAA and Surf Life Saving Australia. Where advice differs by country, we say so.

Who we are

Our editorial team is a handful of surfers based in Cornwall, with decades of combined time in the water in Britain, Portugal, Morocco and California. Some of us have helped out at surf schools and club sessions; none of us pretend that reading a website replaces a qualified instructor. That is why nearly every guide sends you toward a lesson and a lifeguarded beach.

Independence

No surf school, board brand or travel company pays to appear in our guides. When we mention a product or a beach, it is because it is genuinely useful for beginners. If that ever changes, we will label it clearly.

Corrections

The ocean changes and so does advice. If you spot something out of date or unclear, please tell us. We review every guide at least once a year.
